'Winter' for Brothers

4 Dec 2009138
To mark the premiere of Jim Sheridan's movie 'Brothers', take a listen to a new U2 track 'Winter' - from the movie soundtrack.

In the film, opening in the US today, a decorated Marine (Tobey Maguire) goes missing overseas. 'His black-sheep younger brother (Jake Gyllenhaal) cares for his wife (Natalie Portman) and children - with consequences that will shake the foundation of the entire family.'

Director Jim Sheridan has been friends - and occasional collaborator - with U2 since their earliest days in music. The band saw a rough cut of 'Brothers' last year and wrote 'Winter' for the film during the recording of 'No Line on the Horizon'. The soundtrack also features another U2 song, 'Bad'.

'Jim's stories have a kind of simplicity, usually, at the plot level and the complexities are in the drawing of the relationships,' Bono tells the LA Times. 'This one though is actually quite a complex plot line. He really went for this one. There are very strong feelings in this. It's a powerful, powerful film.'

Listen to the track... and tell us what you think.

It seems to me a fantastic song, Bono´s voice is perfect and the melody is unique. I dream of hearing the song in a live concert Thanks bono, adam, larry and edge. Salu2

I am a little torn
The song construction is better in this version. The transitions from verse to chorus sound cleaner and not as disjointed as the original. And the vocal sounds better in parts of it. But I find I miss the passion, the drums, and that pulsing guitar in the Linear version. I could listen to the Linear version all day, even with its mistakes. Maybe this version is better artistically for the movie and for Oscar consideration.
I rated this a 4
because this could be put on an "unknown caller" single as a b-side (and I'd rush out to buy it on the day of it's release) but I know that's not going to happen. all these singles from "no line" have spawned no b-sides they really let me down this time around. 60-70 songs written in morroco, the shelved rick rubin songs and no b-sides to spoil the dedicated fans? come on

The original version is better by far
Instrumentally, vocally, lyrically.

Wow....
Very powerful and poignant....

very moving
I heard this version last night in the movie Brothers, where it plays over the credits. In the context of the movie, it was very powerful and moving. The vocals perfectly capture the soldier's heartbreak and disillusionment. I really, really want to hear it again but, unfortunately, it's not on the movie soundtrack album! Please release it!!!!!!

Hmmmmm Good
Sounds Like a real nice song. But seeing The Movie & hearing The song in a specific Scene, will work out really well. I was not Mad about "The Hands That Built America" when i heard it first, but i heard it in "Gangs Of New York" wow a really fantastic song. Give it a chance it will turn out Beautiful

Should have been on 'No Line...'
Excellent melodic track that has come outta nowhere! Why wasn't it on the album?!!!!
donster0202
reminiscent of "Hands!"
LOVE IT GUYS! this totally reminds me of the caliber of "The Hands That Built America." and fits in perfectly with the story-telling style of "No Line On The Horizon." lookin' forward to hearing the rest & seeing how it compliments the sinister feel of the movie! and SO can't wait for "Songs of Ascent!" keep up your amazing & inspiring pursuit of getting to that place where the music is taking you! wish more peeps understood that you are following the art where it is leading you (instead of you forcing it into a pre-packaged U2)! ROCK ON BOYS!

Winter Part II
It sounds interesting enough but the original version from the Linear film is really great and I enjoy listen to it still as much as anything on NLOTH. So I hope you guys will still release the original version as well.

Winter is coming...
Wow, even more emotional than the version on "Linear" which I also really like! Perfect! Both versions should be out on a single, soon.

F*****g great
I prefer this version over the one appeared on the 'linear' documentary, and it's better for a possible Oscar nomination...

Well done guys!

Enjoyable
Saw the film this evening, really fell for it. I heard the Linear version earlier in the year and was trying to anticipate it in the film. When this version began I was taken back, but set forth as it truly fit for the tone of the film. It really lands its notes right and serves as an excellent conclusion to the film. I just wish the audience cared as much as I did to really take in these great lyrics -- really moving to the story at hand. Can't wait to be able to pick this version up!

well...

Interesting sound...
...though I love the original version better, particularily the guitar. But this version has a really cool layered cool-down vibe to it, which is still very nice to listen to. I could get used to it.
saba
older version a little better
Much as I love this song, the original version that was floating around the Net some months ago, is better I think... the drums on that version and even the vocals / lyrics are better there - I think!
