'Winter' for Brothers

4 Dec 2009138
To mark the premiere of Jim Sheridan's movie 'Brothers', take a listen to a new U2 track 'Winter' - from the movie soundtrack.

In the film, opening in the US today, a decorated Marine (Tobey Maguire) goes missing overseas. 'His black-sheep younger brother (Jake Gyllenhaal) cares for his wife (Natalie Portman) and children - with consequences that will shake the foundation of the entire family.'

Director Jim Sheridan has been friends - and occasional collaborator - with U2 since their earliest days in music. The band saw a rough cut of 'Brothers' last year and wrote 'Winter' for the film during the recording of 'No Line on the Horizon'. The soundtrack also features another U2 song, 'Bad'.

'Jim's stories have a kind of simplicity, usually, at the plot level and the complexities are in the drawing of the relationships,' Bono tells the LA Times. 'This one though is actually quite a complex plot line. He really went for this one. There are very strong feelings in this. It's a powerful, powerful film.'

Listen to the track... and tell us what you think.

incredible
I have listened to this 20 - 30 times this morning and its incredible...where can I buy the single!!! Bonos voice at the end is heartbreaking...LOVE it

greater than 1
Never ceases to amaze me how U2 have a deft gift for making multiple versions of the same song. I was a huge fan of this track when I heard it on the Linear film and read somewhere (I think) that Eno pushed for its inclusion on the NLOTH album. Understandable. I imagine that its incarnation here is a nice response to the film. Nice work

Winter
Love it. I don't understand people complaining about it being different from the other version, We already have that one, so it is great to have a different take. Also fits the movie perfectly. I prefer this version, and the vocal is amazing

good stuff
I thought that was good. Not only was it a good song but it was very appropriate for the mood of the movie as well.

great song. however...
This is a great song and seems like it would fit the movie brothers really well but I do like the original version from Linear better. Hopefully they will release that version on Songs of Ascent

Bono's voice is beautiful on this track!
Like almost every U2 song...something beautiful, refreshing, new, magical...What a poetic song; can't wait to see it in the movie!!!!

Linear
Both versions have great potential as a live track. Kind of depends on how U2 want to portray the song live. Could be a great acoustic track.
cugini

Um.. no.
I didn't like the version on Linear much, and this is worse. I'm sorry, but Bono's voice sounds awful.

Winter's back!
loved this track on linear, sorry it didn't stay on the album, so maybe this is the reason....great alt version, this is really nice and I'm sure suits the mood of the movie, and the voice of Bono will lend to that here...like many others lets get some release of both versions asap...and maybe even hear it live in Vienna for U2010.

Prefer original still
This sounds good but the swailing piano and Edges guitar playing behind Bono's vocals in the original still take the cake for me.
bosko
Nice but too slow
I honestly have been so excited & hopeful to hear this track finished on the next record. This takes it in a totally new direction which I am not feeling nearly as much. I would like it a lot if I didn't already love the other.

Unsure
I really enjoy the Linear version, and this version is really quite different. I really want to hear the full version though, when will it be released?

Brothers Soundcheck
Its interesting...I've heard many of U2 soundtracks from movies and honestly was never impress with them except In The Name of the Father and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider...I think its different for U2 because its unique and mature...The sound doesn't try to win over the teeny-pop crowd but a crowd of people who want to listen to a narrative within a song...I haven't saw Brothers yet so even when I see the movie this song would simply be a part of its soundtrack..

BRAVO
WINTER is a perfect flow for this Innocent webby Brothers movie that's rich with deep emotional impact...far from dorment... Bonus Scene with U2 BAD from the Boom Box... also well pivoting done : ).

WHAT THE ?
Why not let us hear the full song ?? Why is this version not on the CD soundtrack?
pragakhan
never change the original
never change the orignal its good for the movie but i wanna hear the linear track
jazzyjoesig
empathetic
To me, this version of the song brings out emotions like sorrow and self pity while at the same time grace and empathy. This reminds me of the "remastered" sometimes you can't make it or side two from the Joshua tree. I wish U2 would go with their gut and release whats true to their heart versus working with producers to try to make the top ten. That will come...

Sweet
Bono's voice is truly sweet to the ear...his range of notes is breathtaking...could sit and listen all day!

So beautiful! I really wanted to hear this song in a concert.

Prefer the original
I like the original song way better. Some of the lyrics are better though, but it doesn't give me goosebumps and the original does.....every time!
