No.1 Baby

23 Apr 2010154

The editors of SPIN have ranked the most influential releases since the magazine's 1985 beginnings - and Achtung Baby comes in at No.1.

'U2's most immediately dynamic music since 1982's War, and its most emotionally frank songs to date, capturing that particular early-'90s rub of boundless possibility and worn-down despair...

'One' became an indelible anthem because it admitted 'we're not the same' but urged that we've gotta 'carry each other' nonetheless. The squalling swagger of 'The Fly' resonated due to the rock star at its center confessing he's a liar and a thief. And for 'Mysterious Ways,' the Edge somehow concocted a jubilantly snarling riff that transformed Bono's gospel come-on...'

Here's what Spin says.

So what's so special about Achtung Baby ?

Achtung Baby - the start of my U2 musica
Love everything about this album - the songs, the album cover art, the music videos, the Zoo TV tour and the Live DVD from Sydney! This was the album that got me hooked on U2 and made me go out and purchase their back catalouge. I can still remember hearing The Fly on the radio for the first time and going "Wow - who is that?" as it sounded so different to everything else on the radio. This album still makes me go Wow today. Best U2 album ever - a true classic.

New Sound, New Direction
I was just talking to a friend about this the other night... This was quite a departure from all their previous stuff. They embraced art without any limits and allowed their creative process to explore new avenues. Some fans were not ready for the change but many were quick to embrace it - I was one of them! Achtung Baby should have won the Grammy that year for best album but Daniel Lanois did get Best Producer - well deserved. Congratulation guys, Spin has recognized the weight this body of work carries and the impact it has made and continues to have. Cheers! Ric

What Got Me Into U2
I was a late bloomer. I didn't buy this album tell 2002, and it blew my mind. I listened to it over and over and over to the point my mom thought there was a problem with me and wanted to throw it out. I've been the biggest U2 fans ever since. Unbelievable and Exciting! No comparisons to any other album by any other bands to date!

It's Achtung Baby!
It is one of the first albums that really transformed me and just pierced my soul. I LOVE Achtung Baby. If you don't love it than you don't know anything about music. There are no words to describe this album except - masterpiece.

Yeah baby Achtung baby
This is one my favorite albums...Every song has its special magic on me. I remember watching The fly video for the very first time and how I loved the Edge's guitar. ONE has a special meaning for me being a girl from Sarajevo- (during the war years it kept me going on so many levels)..Ultra Violet ( Light my way) still gives me chills when I listen to it..as well as Acrobat.. Congrats and well deserved guys! Thank you!

Departure
Achtung Baby was such a departure from Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum I remember a record store clerk telling me that people were returning it. Fortunately I understood it, right away. I think it threw most Americans at first because they were Elvis and now they were Ziggy Stardust. But the quality of the music and the power of the lyric were purely U2. I've been a fan too long to have a favorite, but Achtung is the benchmark.

Best album period!
The album that is known for cutting down the Josuah Tree, Achtung Baby is the just the best themed written material ever. It covered the media madness of the 90's , the rejoice and the tears of the Cold War ending. Next to No Line on The Horizon , this is U2's masterpiece.

The best U2 masterpiece
Their turning point turned out to be the best. JT, UF, and ATYCLB are right behind. Ultraviolet, The Fly, Zoo Station & Mysterious Ways really are the highlights. You can't beat Achtung Baby. The best U2 album ever.

The best record of the history
The best record I've heard. All the songs are perfect, but specially The Fly and Ultraviolet (a tremendous perfomance in Barcelona 2/7/2009). AB and HTAAB are the best ones.

#1, Y'all
Definitely they guys' masterpiece. Achtung tells a story and you follow the character through the highest of highs, the lowest of lows and all the thought in between. The coolest part is that every song stands on its own wonderfully. But when you put it in the context of the whole record it makes so much sense. Rock and Roll Doggie!!

Ready for the laughin gas ...
Outstanding album. Already 20 years we've got this beautiful songs in our ears. The ZooTV era remembers me of one the best summers I've had until now ....

Achtung Baby
The finest hour for me, this era with the zootv tour brings great nostalgia from my youth - it meant everything to me. (and still does). Theres not a wasted line in the lyrics from the start of zoo station to the closing of love is blindness - every second of that 55 minutes has meaning - an absolute masterpiece.

Best album ever made
Never got tired of listening to the greatest album ever made. Achtung was the first U2 album I bought and it still spins on a weekly basis in my cd-player. Ultraviolet is my all time favorite U2 song so I was very happy to find it on the setlist for 360-tour. Hope they play it this summer to.

After Rattle and Hum a different U2-sound. Absolutly renewing in the 90 and untill now this is one of my favorite U2 albums, maybe the best the made! Also the timeperiod of the album; Germany, the wall, the Trabant, the shows, everything OK! One of my favorits is Mysterious Ways with the new sound of The Edge, perfect! Now just waiting for a re-mastered CD with extras/bonus ;-)

No Brainer
A timeless classic. If this came out tomorrow it would not sound the least bit dated. Keep coming back to Baby and Joshua Tree. Completely different styles but unquestionably the same band., If I could only listen to one album the rest of my life - this would be it.

the best part of achtung baby
every track is timeless and you can listen to it over and over and over and over again and it feels like the first time everytime. As I get older, it gets so much better. I especially love acrobat. My favorite part of the album is how it closes with love is blindness, what a hauntingly awesome and deep song, its everything I have ever experienced in the pursuit of love.

The watershed album of U2´s history
"Achtung Baby", ah yes, apparently, as the the word on the streets goes, Joe O´ Herlihy said to the boys in the Berlin studio "Achtung!". He said to get the Dublin lads attention, and now we look back to 1991, and see how much of a classic "Achtung Baby" was both in name and sound by the conspiracy Irish act of Dublin and Cork with the influence of a late 80s and early 90s Germany. In the end, that Irish / German mismatch brought the classics “One”, Love Is Blindness” the sexual euro exotic “The Fly” and “Zoo Station” to simple rock middle of the road pop with “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”. Overall, "Achtung Baby”, was U2´s best album. It bridged their 80s anthem sound with that 90s euro sexual sound that was required at that time. It was a time of change in Europe politically and U2 did that image with their art of contemporary music. As a humble fan, they did it well, indeed very well. It´s my favourite album and in the history of U2, when they will not be around – as all good things do come to an end, it will go down, I’m sure, as the watershed album that saved U2. It´s a pure classic and all twelve tracks are simply brilliant. I still love it and I´m now 45 years old. Like Joe, from Cork, I´m also from Cork and I´m so proud that the whole entourage of U2 have given my nation, Ireland, a modern makeup for three decades! Thank you for that! See you in Seville on September 29th! Can´t wait!!!!!

Spin got it right
This is the best U2 album so far. I'd love to hear them play it in its entirety, like Bruce Springsteen did with his albums on the last tour.
