'Wembley Stadium You Know Your Name'

14 Aug 2009115

'I think something's going to happen tonight.' predicted Bono, just a few songs into tonight's opening show at Wembley Stadium. It did too. First The Hours and then Elbow, with a particularly winning set, had caught the mood on a balmy summers evening and from the moment Larry opened up Breathe, the momentum barely slowed.

Too many stand-outs to list but our highlights included: a stomping version of 'Crazy' turning the neighbourhood into a disco; the joyful stadium karaoke of Unknown Caller; some breathtaking new visuals in Sunday Bloody Sunday and Walk On; the opening of 'Still Haven't Found' when 90,000 people took over the vocal; Bono reminiscing about his first visit to this city ( 'I slept on Waterloo Station as an 18 year old with a demo of our song Out of Control, the city's been good to us.' ) and a moving dedication of With or Without You 'For Beautiful Eunice Kennedy Shriver', longtime friend of the band who died earlier this week.

London shows are usually good and this was a great one - but what did you think? Have you caught your breath? How was it ? Add your reviews below: what was your favourite track, the moment you'll never surrender?

They can't do better than ZOO station to
Sorry guys but I'm not in accordance with all of you .I came from Belgium with my wife to see the band.Yes that was a great show but Bono was far from the audience without any real contact with us ! I was on the left side ,level one , I haven't see Edge because a post was in front of me...for 150£ !!Yes show was very good but too big !That's not the U2 I want to see ! Where is the Bono taking a girl in the public ? Where's the flag on sunday bloody sunday ? Where's the dancer on Mysterious ways ? I don't remember that Bono has come and sing once on the left side ...Great lights , but will be better for the price (I remember "where the streets have no name" during "Zooropa" ,I was blind ,not here!!).Off course I appreciate the gig ,like evrybody , but U2 is too big now and we'll never see shows like the early days ,that's a shame !!

Crazy Night
A superb show. Crazy (remix) was a real treat - a great version with a suitably funky video as the band stomped around the stage.

WELL WORTH THE TRIP!
The culmination of our trip to Europe was the concert at Wembley on the 15th! My ears were ringing all the way home - SO WORTH IT!!! "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" with the stadium carrying and Bono harmonizing and "Stay" were the best! See you in the states!!

Awesome crowd.
I already posted one comment on here which is hopefully going to be shown soon but i,ve got to say a massive thank you not only to U2 but to everybody else who was there in the crowd along with myself, my sister and my mate on Friday 14th at Wembley. A stunning crowd with a magical atmosphere thanks guys. Hope everyone else loves the rest of the tour as much as we did, wherever you are.

Just Amazing!!
What can i say about Wembley Stadium last Friday (14th Aug)? All i can say is that was an awesome night. The whole crowd singing the first verse of I Still Havent Found What I,m Looking For, and the special moment when all the lights went off, leaving thousands of mobile phone screens twinkling around the packed stadium. Thats the third time i,ve seen U2 and i just hope there,s a fourth time cos Friday 14th August 2009 will live in the memory forever.

paris - dublin - london
after being to both Paris & Dublin, went to Fantastic Wembley Arena on 14th - Great seats and sound well worth the £150 per seat each. Dublin was by far the best, with London coming a close runner up. U2 once again were superb and the claw coupled with the lighting in the stadium made it look amazing. Thanks again to Bono Boys and also to Pat and the Boys at Rock Solid Events London who secured the excellent tickets for Paris & London. Can't wait for the 2nd leg of the tour 2010. Only dissappointment was not getting to hear BAD - but thought the rest was Fantastic. Thankyou U2 for a Brilliant Summer to remember!!

Night was ruined by appalling new Wembley sound/acoustics. It was like putting U2 on your stereo and then sticking your head in a bucket if water. I was in level 5 but I know several people who were on lower levels and said it sounded great (as I discovered as we left early and noticed how the sound improved as we get lower down the stadium). So thanks to Wembley for making the greatest band in the world sound rubbish!

Best concert ever!
After the emotional concert in Berlin and my personal encore of this best U2 tour ever in Gelsenkirchen I decided to go to London to see a 3rd show of this 360° Tour and I saw the best concert ever at this very special place, the Wembley Stadium. Thank you so much for this 'Beautiful Day'.

Still can't believe it...
It was the first U2 show I went to. It was just purely magnificent! Worth travelling such a long way, worth waiting outside Wembley for hours.. worth of everything. I was crying during the last song. Thank you!

Two perfect nights
Both London gigs were the last ones for me and my friends from the SPANISH CLAN, after 6 concerts on this tour!! The set list and the concert were Magnificent, but perhaps I have missed "Stand up Comedy" to be sung The only bad point of the night was the organization when entering Wembley Arena for those like us who were waiting for a long time all day, it was just a disaster, despite this fact we ended in the front row and we can be seen on this video!! Thanks so much for this tour!!can't wait for the next one!!

hot summer night
Rammed in the right hand side of the monster four legged stage, the place was rockin already, then it happened, the count in to VERTIGO, you got 2 choices, explode with the crowd or die trying. Hot summer night, beautiful crowd and U2 smashing your head in with a monster set, WHO COULD ASK FOR MORE?

U2 Wembley
Should have been called the 270 tour, band most of time had backs to the rear wembley areas to much, revolving stage would have improved it. PA in Wembley also what you expect from a large stadium, ie muffled , unclear and reverberations. If i were nearer the front it would have obviously been better. Lets have more smaller gigs and bring back the bigger Popmart /Vertigo large screen and play to us all......

Still buzzing!
What an amazing night. As ever I almost hyperventilated when they came on stage, then the tears....thrilled they did Unforgettable Fire as I've never heard them do it at a concert, made me feel 13 again when I first discovered U2 all those years ago. Loved the new stuff live.Roll on Saturday at Cardifff.....boys PLEASE give us Bad, I'm desperate to hear it! So great to be in the company of other U2 fans and sing along. (Think my husband is bored of me going on now!)

Been to see the band 7 times now over the last 20 years, loved the concert but have to say sound quality was a bit dodgy early on! Highlights were still haven't found what I'm looking for, vertigo and ultraviolet. Really missed The Fly. Looked like the band really enjoyed it.

Great but
Here is a band that has such a wide range of fans that they can't possibly please all the people all of the time. That said, the paucity of Achtung Baby/Zooropa era songs disappointed. It also has to be said that, by U2's standards, this tour lacks in the visual department. Yes, they've made a big statement with the claw, but then seem not to know what to do with it. There was more visual flair and creativity in the intro of the 'Zoo' shows than the whole of Friday's event. Thanks for a brilliant night. You've more to ask of yourselves.

A special night ... London 1
My trip from Vienna to London to watch an awesome and outstanding show from U2 in the "Church of football" will be part of my lifetime memories. I have seen them in Vienna 2001 and 2005, but Wembley was the peak. When we listen to U2, we are "One" !! So for me I have found what I'm looking for ! Hope they will play in Vienna in 2010 !!

This was our first U2 gig and it was an absolutely amazing show. We loved every minute of it, with a grat selection of tracks, old and new. Can't wait for the NEXT tour!
