With Guggi, in London

1 Dec 2004
Edge, Adam and Bono were among the glitterati in London this evening, at the opening night of the first London exhibition by painter and lifelong U2 friend Guggi.

Terence Conran, John Rocha, Charles Saatchi, Cat Deeley, Gavin Friday, Howie B and Jo Whiley were among those thronging the prestigious Osborne Samuel Gallery in central London to see the Dublin painter's first London show.

Bono warmly introduced his childhood friends' work by musing on the hidden question in the mind of everyone in the gallery:' What's the story with the bowls?' Whatever the answer, he said, he views the paintings as 'religious work' because 'religion and art collide in the idea of transfiguration.'

According to Jeff Koons, Guggi's distinctive representations of bowls and vessels 'demand the participation of the viewer... through these enigmatic paintings we find our connection with humanity too.'

You can judge for yourself by seeing some of Guggi's work in the new show

Guggi turned to painting in 1986 at the age of 27 and first came into the public eye in the 1980s with the Virgin Prunes. He is largely self-taught and has exhibited widely in Ireland. In 2000 he had an acclaimed show with Tony Shafrazi in New York. Judging by the number of red stickers appearing tonight, the London show will prove just as successful.
