Lanois Honoured in Canada

15 Apr 2002
Longtime U2 producer Daniel Lanois has been inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame at the annual JUNOS.

In a video taped specially for the event, Larry, Adam and Edge sang 'Danny Boy' while Bono thanked the producer for his work with U2 over eighteen years.

Calling him an 'extraordinarily gifted man and musician,' he said, 'From you we have our best work < under the threat of violence of course.'

With Larry and Edge humming, Bono continued: 'Dan. How could we put it into words? It's Impossible. And so we sing to you of extraordinary times that we've spent together at work in the studio and at play around the city of Dublin. Where they still talk of you in the cafes and the bars and the botanical gardens where you would often go to photograph small shrubbery.

'To sing to you Danny Lanois, an extraordinary gifted man, musician, and thug. God bless you and all who sail in you. Canada is lucky to have you.

'Your country doesn't need you. We do. God Bless Danny Boy Lanois.'

The video tribute also including testimonials from Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson. And for the first time in the history of the annual JUNOS, an inductee into the Canadian Music Hall also received an award - Lanois was presented with the Jack Richardson Best Producer award for his work on "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation" from All That You Can't Leave Behind.

U2 were again on video to thank promoter Michael Cohl, another Hall of Fame inductee, who promoted PopMart in 1997-98. This time they reinterpreted another traditional tune - 'Michael Cohl the Boat Ashore, Hallelujah!'

Twenty-eight JUNO Awards were handed out at St. John's Convention Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. A complete list of the can be found at www.junos.sympatico.ca
