U2.com slipped into the studio a few days back where the band played us the new tracks and we were blown away. A kind of musical autobiography, the eleven new songs chart their earliest influences from 70s rock and punk to early 80s electronica and soul... and reveal how music changed everything. As Bono sings in the lead song, 'The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)' 'I woke up when the miracle occurred/ Heard a song that made some sense out of the world...'

Exploring themes of home and family, relationships and discovery, detailed liner notes fill out the picture with resonant stories, like one of the first gigs the teenage band got into.

'The 4 members of U2 went to see the Ramones playing in the state cinema in Dublin without thinking about how we were going to get in. we had no tickets and no money.. My best friend Guggi had a ticket and he snuck us through a side exit he pried open. The world stopped long enough for us to get on it. Even though we only saw half the show, it became one of the great nights of our life....'

Songs of Innocence was recorded in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles and is produced by Danger Mouse, along with Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood. The album closes with 'The Troubles' featuring the distinctive vocals of Swedish indie singer-songwriter Lykke Li.

Here's the eleven tracks: The Miracle (of Joey Ramone), Every Breaking Wave, California (There Is No End To Love), Song For Someone, Iris (Hold Me Close), Volcano, Raised By Wolves, Cedarwood Road, Sleep Like A Baby Tonight, This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now, The Troubles.

On October 13th the physical release of Songs of Innocence comes with a 24-page booklet. A deluxe, gatefold double album, contains an acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks: Lucifer's Hands, The Crystal Ballroom, The Troubles (Alternative version) and Sleep Like a Baby Tonight (Alternative Perspective Mix by Tchad Blake)

The album will also be available as a gatefold, double white-vinyl LP with an exclusive remix of "The Crystal Ballroom".

YOU DID IT AGAIN, U2
Ok. I want to be honest. I have loved EVERY SINGLE U2 song. When I was fifteen, a friend of mine made me hear The Joshua Tree album for the first time and I thought: what's this? Why I didn't know? This is the music I love, the most beautiful I've ever heard!!! - It was love at first sight. That moment changed my life. Since that day I loved U2 more than myself, I spent my life with you - almost every single day of my life - and I have loved every song, lyric, speech and choice you have made. Because I love Bono's way to sing, Edge's way to play guitar, Larry's way to play drums and Adam's way to play bass. Even when you play other's songs. I thought No line on the horizon was your best work because I adored that album. But this time it's different. When I listened to Songs of Innocence I went back to my teen age and thought: Wow!! Hey, this is the music I like!!! This is the music I was expecting from my band!! You did it again U2. You changed my life. Again. Until the last september 8 I did have a favourite U2 album, a favourite song, a favourite verse... Now my certainties are broken. Everything changed. There are eleven new songs to considerate and each one of them is GREAT and could be the new number one. But at the same time, nothing changes and my certainties are stronger than ever. U2 turned my world upside down - again - but you are still my band, my only love, my religion because this album is the BEST WORK EVER!!!! So today, on your 38th birthday, I say: thank you for giving me a new dream, for taking me by hands and bringing me to a new wondeful journey. I spent part of the last summer walking around Dublin hoping to meet you, but it didn't happen. Well, if this was the price to pay for Songs of Innocence, it was well deserved. And if this the beginning of a new journey, I can't wait for Songs of Experience. I'm very proud and honoured to be a fan of yours. So happy birthday U2. Thank you for giving me the key to your kingdom. There is no end to love...

Its a grower
I commented a couple of weeks ago, with my point of view after a first listen and I was very luke warm about the album. However, 2 weeks on, and Ive been converted. The album carries you on a rollercoaster of an emotional ride. The songs are different but the sounds and influences are there to be heard. Cant wait for Songs of Experience!!

I think the new album is amazing and I actually will be buying it on vinyl. I have been a fan for a long time and I am starting to think this may actually be your best album - it's lush, beautiful, and quite moving. And it rocks. Off like a Volcano!
Wow, just when we were contemplating the end of the world with comments like "we're not relevant", an album that will truly rank among the best ever and another direction that nobody saw coming. Amazing, and possibly a long awaited no.1 in Volcano? (WOW...well worth the wait!). Just proves all the critics right...Bono really has NO idea what he's talking about :-)

So worth the wait
I was 10 yrs old when I was given a cassette tape of this group called U2. The rest is history! 33 yrs later & I am still a certified U2 junkie. Now my kids listen to them & went to the 360 concert at ages 11 & 12. I have been listening to the new songs constantly. Looking forward to the tour. Been to every tour since Joshua Tree when I was 15. There will never be another band that comes close to U2. Thanks guys for so many yrs of great music.
