U2.com slipped into the studio a few days back where the band played us the new tracks and we were blown away. A kind of musical autobiography, the eleven new songs chart their earliest influences from 70s rock and punk to early 80s electronica and soul... and reveal how music changed everything. As Bono sings in the lead song, 'The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)' 'I woke up when the miracle occurred/ Heard a song that made some sense out of the world...'

Exploring themes of home and family, relationships and discovery, detailed liner notes fill out the picture with resonant stories, like one of the first gigs the teenage band got into.

'The 4 members of U2 went to see the Ramones playing in the state cinema in Dublin without thinking about how we were going to get in. we had no tickets and no money.. My best friend Guggi had a ticket and he snuck us through a side exit he pried open. The world stopped long enough for us to get on it. Even though we only saw half the show, it became one of the great nights of our life....'

Songs of Innocence was recorded in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles and is produced by Danger Mouse, along with Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood. The album closes with 'The Troubles' featuring the distinctive vocals of Swedish indie singer-songwriter Lykke Li.

Here's the eleven tracks: The Miracle (of Joey Ramone), Every Breaking Wave, California (There Is No End To Love), Song For Someone, Iris (Hold Me Close), Volcano, Raised By Wolves, Cedarwood Road, Sleep Like A Baby Tonight, This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now, The Troubles.

On October 13th the physical release of Songs of Innocence comes with a 24-page booklet. A deluxe, gatefold double album, contains an acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks: Lucifer's Hands, The Crystal Ballroom, The Troubles (Alternative version) and Sleep Like a Baby Tonight (Alternative Perspective Mix by Tchad Blake)

The album will also be available as a gatefold, double white-vinyl LP with an exclusive remix of "The Crystal Ballroom".

BLOWN AWAY!
Still blown away by this new gift from U2 (and gift from Apple)! This album is part Ramones (obviously), part Clash, part early U2 (October/Boy/War), and a whole lot of new searching musically & spiritually. This is art. This is art that reaches us on a human level. This is what is so rare about the music industry today...and this is why, even though I got the digital download for free, I will gladly spend my money for the vinyl LP and following tour. Thank you for being genuine...it's rare these days.

u2 Dublin
So... this is going sound crazy. But, for several years, I've had this idea of a u2 album. I wanted them to make an album about Dublin... where they grew up and what it was like and why they were here. I wanted them to explain through song why u2 was u2 and how the journey began, not from a perspective of a boy, but from men looking back. This is it. And it's amazing.

Songs of Innocence (Baby)
I've listened to the album through twice now and all I can say is, I like what I hear. It might be a little premature to say this but I think it might be their strongest work since Zooropa. I never really took to All That You Leave Behind - it sounded like a band stepping back from the creative edge to me. I liked How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb at the time and there were some stand out tracks on that album but I hardly listen to it any more. No Line On The Horizon had some great moments but it had Put On Your Boots on that album and that was the first U2 song that I actively disliked. This one sounds a little more rounded - melodic and thoughtful and Song For Someone is starting to sound very much on a par with peak U2 - beautiful. Good to have you back boys - thank you for this gift.

Love your New Baby
Been listening to it all day at work. Breathtaking and raw. For me the stand out track is Every Breaking Wave. It feels like the band have come full circle with this album. From Boy to Songs of Innocence, both so personal and full of energy. Thank you guys so much. You are still relevant and I love your new baby.

Fantastic!
I'm a jaded fan who hasn't really fell in love with any of your records since 1997s Pop. I think this album is fantastic! Well done! In my eyes, this is a total artistic redemption. Love it. Been listening to it nonstop and I think this one can sit proudly in the library next to the best of your output from the 80s and 90s.

Thank you!!!!! Than you!!!!!!
What a great surprise it was to wake up on a cloudy day in Perth Australia, to hear there is a new U2 album out. It brought sunshine to my day and you couldn't wipe the smile from my face no matter how much you tried. It's amazing how happy a new U2 album can make you feel. Thanks guys for this album and all the music you have ever created.
Sounding good so far...
After only a couple of listens, I can say it sounded really good from the very beginning. Of course we have to give it some time, so what I can talk about are the most "immediate" songs so far, which for me were "The Miracle", "Every Breaking Wave" (specially), "Song for Someone", "Sleep Like a Baby Tonight" and "The Troubles". I also like that it really sounds like an album from beginning to end, not only the songs are good on their own, but also as whole it is pretty grounded. Gotta thank the production team for that, as well as for the choice of track order. Anyways, thank you a lot guys, this was a very pleasant surprise.

I just listened to it and I love the sound! A bit of Achtung, a bit of HTDAAB, a bit of Pop.. I recognized the riff in "Volcano" from their live song "Glastonbury", but where are songs like Mercy", "North Star", "Invisible" and "Return of the Stingray Guitar"? Maybe on an EP next year ;)?
