Party Night in Dublin

24 Jun 2005
A rapturous reception for U2 tonight, returning home for the first of three shows.

The moment the opening chords of Vertigo blasted out of the huge black and red speaker stacks, Dublin was rocking - and nothing was going to spoil the party.

Despite periodic moments of rain during the evening, there was no serious downpour and anyway none of the 82,000 fans packed into Croke Park were going to let it dampen their spirits.

'We've been looking forward to this show for months,' said Michael Connor from Co Kildare. 'The vibe at a U2 show is fantastic, whatever the weather.'

'Why would we want to be in the stands undercover when we can be in the bomb shelter right up close to the band?' asked Mat Anderson, who had flown in from the UK.

Why indeed ? This was a top night all round and we'll have a full report of the show shortly, meantime, here's the set list.
