More Artists Now 'Going On'

10 Sep 2001
More artists are joining the special benefit recording of What's Going On to raise the profile of the AIDS crisis in Africa.

Moby, Aaron Lewis of Staind, and Ja Rule will also participate in the all-star cover of Marvin Gaye's classic song. Other artists likely to be involved in the project include Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, Destiny's Child, *NSYNC, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Wyclef Jean, Nona Gaye, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, Mary J. Blige, Lil' Kim, Jennifer Lopez and Missy Elliott.

'I'm involved with it because Bono and I are friends, and I've been hanging out at the studio where they're doing it,' said Moby, who wasn't sure if he would actually sing on the track. 'The thing is, he's got these really good singers doing it, like Beyonce Knowles [of Destiny's Child] and the guy from Staind - all these people who can really sing - so it would be pathetic if I tried to join in on that level. I might do a remix for them or help out, production-wise.'

The recording of the track - thought to be the biggest gathering of stars from the music world since Band Aid in the mid-eighties - was conceived by Bono and produced by Jermaine Dupri. It is set for a December 1st release - World AIDS Day - and will benefit Artists Against AIDS Worldwide and the Global AIDS Alliance.

Speaking at the launch of the recording, Bono said, 'This time that we're all living in history will be remembered probably for two things, the Internet and it will be remembered for an entire continent getting flushed down the toilet while people stood by or a time when the world woke up to its responsibility and to its neighbours.'
