Best You Ever Saw (Playing Support)

20 Apr 2010264
Lenny Kravitz, Interpol, Snow Patrol, Kasabian, Razorlight, The Fray, One Republic: depending on where you're seeing U2 this year, you'll also get to see one of the above. Last year you might have caught Kaiser Chiefs, Glasvegas, The Hours, Elbow or Muse.

And over the years some pretty fine bands have rocked the house just a few minutes before the main attraction took the stage - sometimes long before they became household names themselves.

(In fact we got so overcome at the memory of the great acts who've played with U2 that we pulled together this little gallery.)

Anyone see The Kings of Leon or The Killers on the Vertigo Tour ? Or Garbage or Stereophonics on the Elevation Tour? Public Enemy or Stereo MC's on ZOO TV ? BB King on Lovetown ? How about The Pretenders or Los Lobos or Lou Reed on The Joshua Tree Tour in the 1980's? Or Lone Justice when the band were touring The Unforgettable Fire. And, come to think of it, what about The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith...

Was there an act you first discovered when they came out on stage before U2? Who was the best act you ever saw with them... and why? (Don't forget to include the tour or year of the show.)

Opening Act
I was so happy to see The Pixies in Tempe, Arizona on April 10, 1992. I drove from Los Angeles without tickets and waited in line at the box office. To see the Pixies from the 7th row on the floor was bliss, my two other friends and I were pinching each other waiting through the Pixies. I also would say that it's always great to be in Los Angeles, its always great to be a part of The Dalton Brothers lead in 1987!!

Best Opening Band
Public Enemy and Big Audio Dynamite at one show opening for the Achtung Baby Tour 1992 in Chicago. It was by far the best show I have ever seen.

KAISER CHIEFS
Must be Kaiser Chiefs - they're cool but dull in 2005 but in 2009 they simply rocked Croke and Stade de France... it felt like seeing young U2 again! The Killers where poor in Poland... not much better on their own show later in Berlin... Snow Patrol are always good fun (did they already won in most u2 supports category?) but it seems USA as usual gets the better... Pearl Jam, Muse, Garbage... wish I was there... for U2 show and the amazin support acts! The worst U2 support I've seen were the Audioweb & The Zutons

Slash joining Black Eyed Peas on stage for "Sweet Child O Mine" was great. What a surprise that was and got the crowd moving for the DVD filming.

Back in 1983 - on the WAR Tour Big Country played support at Birmingham Odeon (UK). They were great. But, then U2 came out with Gloria and were stonking!

Best Supporting Act
This is very tough... been to a few. To mich40, his new band was called Institute. My favorite would either be Stereophonics in NJ for Elevation, or Snow Patrol in MA for 360. Looking forward to Interpol in NJ!

Big Audio Dynamite II (The Clash)
It was November, 1992, Mexico City, I was far away from the stage when suddenly I identified to Joe Strummer, it was amazing to notice that. Definitively the best openning act not only for a U2 show but for many other bands. Thank you U2 for bringing BAD II (The Clash) to Mexico!!!

Best opening act is.....Larry Mullen dru
Arcade Fire...opening in Montreal and Ottawa 4 years back. Electric, insane, imaginative...a collective synergy that absolutely had us all totally buying in. It was the first experience listening to Arcade Fire and we almost skipped it. Which in retrospect would have been an incredibly unfortunate loss. Best opening ever...for moi !
