Arriving a couple of years after the band had vowed to go away and 'dream it all up again', Achtung Baby was a promise kept and the record was widely seen as a sonic and visual reinvention.
As Miriam Jonker posted on our earlier story, 'I loved this album from day one and it is still the album I listen to the most. Excellent capture of the zeitgeist at the time and a great reinvention of U2….'
Or as pawel_peczak added, 'No one has ever recorded anything like Achtung Baby before, after and ever after. It's a masterpiece. Reflects the whole generation. It's Yellow Submarine of the 1990's. Its new Europe, unified. It's personal story of love and divorce, love hurts, love loves ....so emotional. It changed my entire life forever...'
But let's imagine you're making your own playlist of the band's finest songs and you can only choose THREE songs from any one album… what are the three songs from Achtung Baby that you could not live without?
Vote for those three in our poll… then tell us why in the comments below.
Achtung Baby
1. Zoo Station 2. Even Better Than The Real Thing 3. One 4. Until The End Of The World 5. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses 6. So Cruel 7. The Fly 8. Mysterious Ways 9. Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World 10. Ultra Violet (Light My Way) 11. Acrobat 12. Love Is Blindness
Streets, Still haven't found, and With or without you are the upslope, UV, Acrobat, Love is blindness are the downslope. You can get the whole late-80s / early 90s story of U2 from these two bookending sets of three.

Acrobat + Until the end + Ultraviolet
Acrobat - saw U2 playing live on the last tour and it was the highest point of the concert for me.
Until the end of the world - it´s about me ? hahaha
Ultraviolet - how can a "baby" song be so good ?
Achtung is one of my favorite U2 records so it´s hard to tell only 3 but these 3 songs are on my favorite top ten list of all songs!
Big hug from Portugal ;-)

The fly
The Fly - putting on my 12 inch The Fly single for the first time expecting to hear Joshua Tree version 2 was like. WTF
The B side was even better.
A truly stunning album followed, I now own 3 copies but my original 1991 “Adam” cover vinyl remains my fav.

Very difficult to choose as every song on the album is bloody fantastic. I have always found it difficult to decide which was the best album U2 have done to date The Joshua Tree or Achtung baby, but I think for me Achtung baby just pips it to the finish line. The Fly is my most played followed by Zoo Station and then Ultraviolet. The Fly live from Chicago Elevation tour gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it, got to be the best guitar solo ever.

Mission impossible
Like asking a parent with 12 children to say which 3 they couldn't live without.

Songs
Until the end... Acrobat... these songs guide me in life. Judas betrayal, the enemy behind your back, you just need to close your eyes, but there is a way out. Achtung Baby ...

Impossible survey but hey...
The whole album is classic, timeless, out of this world, etc...
But if I have to choose:
Who's gonna ride your wild horses, the album version is so much better than the single version imho (terrific, spacy intro...)
So cruel. Heartbreakingly beautiful song.
Acrobat, the album ends really dark with this song and Love is Blindness. Really scary when I heard this for the first time, like entering some dark places in your mind (reminds me of Exit in its darkness).

Arrrrgghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Do you select the songs that resonate from the album or from ones that impacted most at live shows…..both I guess.
Ultra Violet , laying on your bed looking at the ceiling , dark and light sounds rush all around. Baby baby light my way, followed up with 90’s McPhisto. A must surely.
Mysterious Ways, whether about a lover, the Holy Spirit, eastern spirituality, as we ask questions of this life, why not dance through it all and accept the mystery within and with out.
One , I have grown out of love recently with One, but if you have to vote and stand by those who have never let you down, the hope of a friend , family , nation or world , or simply as if it wasn’t for this song, then we may never have had, Stay, Zooropa, Stuck in a Moment, Beautiful Day, Sometimes You Can’t Make it On Your Own, Walk On, Vertigo, Original of the Species, Miami , Every Breaking Wave ++++++

Milestone of my life‘s soundtrack
Making us chose just three of the very best album ever? Nearly impossible… I had to go for UV, wild Horses and Love is Blindness… but I had to leave so cruel, acrobat and real thing and zoo station behind…. I think the votes do not give the full credit to how great all these songs are …
I discovered u2 when I was 12 with Achtung Baby…. but I bought my first record of them when I was 8 (desire) … so really this Album is a milestone in my life’s soundtrack
So… just want to say thank you for this album love every song on it really so what a tough choice to make

I must be an acrobat...
The most difficult decision. Only three... My favourite Ultraviolet. My second best Acobat. And finally Until the end of the world.
But, to be honest U2 songs are the soundtrack of my life! From I will follow to 13!
Peace&Love.

Achtung live
Dear Bono, the Edge, Larry and Adam ,
The album is a masterpiece but
please publish all your live performances soon and stop trading with concerts recorded by fans, do it like Metallica or the red hot chili peppers

So cruel… but these are my choice!
This album has represented a caress, sometimes a burst of energy, an injection of self trust, a sweet company when in tears for an unrequited love.
“One” and “Until the end of the world” beautiful tracks and wonderful, powerful live performances; “Love is blindness” contains one of the most mighty and poignant guitar solos of the endless U2’s catalogue. Can’t help crying every single time.

Hard to choose!
A few days ago I choose Until the end of the world, One and Ultraviolet but ask me now and it will be different. It depends on my mood. All the songs are great! The best album you've ever made!

My adult life
Oh my god, the hours spent listening to this. Despair, heartache, crying til I fall asleep….but then joy, wonder, elation... All of it, wrapped in one album. I am 45 now, feeling old and past expiration, yet this album still rings out in my ears as loud as it did back when I was 18.
Thank you for that. I love it still so much, as I always will this band.

Edge soars
The Fly: Edge does something to soar on almost every song on this album. Nothing captures that better
Zoo Station: those crashing drums...raw and awseome
Ultra Violet: the baby, baby, baby's never seem to end..terrific. could listen to this all day

The Fly
Easily the best song on the record for me, and I think would have made an incredible opener. Also really like Even Better Than The Real Thing (what a title), and I'll give the third to Acrobat. Honourable mentions to One and Mysterious Ways. Love Is Blindness is the weakest in my opinion, and I never warmed to Zoo Station. Overall I just prefer Zooropa by a hair, but overall an enjoyable record.

Almost impossible task..
One, Until the End of the World and Ultraviolet come out on top. Ultimately these three songs just have that can’t-live-without quality. I keep going back to these especially after 30 years so that tells me what I need to know.

Only choose 3? Difficult, it's like sayi
Hi. It's difficult to choose only three, I think that choosing 5 would also have been difficult because there are songs that are not so well known by non-fans that are incredible, at the level of those that were singles, so cruel, Love is Blindness, Who's GOnda ride and Ultraviolet for example, are masterpieces. This album has been with me since I was 18 years old, it is a main part of the soundtrack of the movie of my life when I see it happen in my last seconds. I made my daughters know it and make it their own. Thank you U2.

Very difficult!!!!
Only three out of twelve is a very hard decision, but I would choose The Fly, Zoo Station and One. Until The End Of The World would be the fourth.

Decisions, decisions
Even Better Than The Real Thing as I love the sexiness of the lyrics and how it makes me think of Coca Cola because it’s logo was Better Than The Real Thing for many years.
One because it’s very reflective in the way the lyrics tell us to respect and be kind to each other. Especially in a pandemic.
The Fly because of all its messages, truths and Edge’s amazing guitar. You just had to listen to it to know that this album was going to be something so different to what we’d heard from the band before. Merry Christmas & happy 2022 x
