Exit
18 years old in 1987... I have already been a fan of U2 since the early 80s and any new U2 album is expected and I need the vinyl on the first day of its release. I listen to The Joshua Tree on repeat, lying on my bed; all songs have a soul. I particularly like Exit! I remember it like it was yesterday!

The year we turned 18…
You were May, I was July. When we turned 18, the purist in me went back to vinyl, Sansui receiver, Kenwood Composite turntable, Altec Lansing speakers. Genesis was in the rotation, The Cars, Patti Smith, Police, Devo, Cheap Trick. The feeling of rebellion was jostled within me as I heard the calling of Anarchy came from The Sex Pistols. The siren call of Debbie Harry beckoned me to the dance floor. Getting lost in the music was the healthier outlet that got me past 1978…

Love it!
So I turned 18 only 3 years after Bono and I love the fact that his musical taste was very similar to mine. Obviously I loved U2 so I also love Out of Control. I saw U2 live for the first time in 1981 at Bristol Locarno and they blew me away. A magical gig. They were playing Boy and October and the whole band were on fire but Bono left me enchanted and I have been ever since.
Hong Kong Garden is a great Siouxsie track. I wasn't a huge fan but that song has something about it. Power and subtlety.
Blondie, The Jam, The Police, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and Buzzcocks were all my favourites so every single one of their tracks I love, although I'd probably choose other individual tracks ahead of these.
Because The Night is so so good. Such atmosphere and strength in the music and Patti's voice. Again not a big fan but I loved this single.
My 15 would be:
U2 – I Will Follow
Kate Bush – The Kick Inside
The Jam – Private Hell
The Clash – London Calling
The Cure – Faith
The Specials – Concrete Jungle
Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
Pretenders – Birds of Paradise
Magazine – The Light Pours Out Of Me
The Teardrop Explodes – Treason
Siouxsie and the Banshees – Spellbound
Stiff Little Fingers – Alternative Ulster
Blondie – Detroit 442
The Police – Driven To Tears
The Stranglers – Walk On By

When i was 18, in Mulhouse (France)
i was born in 1973, Sept. Born to Music in 1985, with a new older friend of mine showing me a video of "under a blood red sky". From this moment on, after 2 years discovering everything from The Joshua Tree back to Boy, i started to discover other artists. Most of them were because i had read an interview of U2 saying how much they liked this band, or that this artist would love U2.
so i started my musical discovery ride...it was The Waterboys, it was The Pogues, it was David Bowie...which lead me to Lou Reed, to the Velvet...then to punk. Also there was The Cure, no obvious link (not a single nice word from Robert Smith around here, he?...) apart from what i still believe a true sincerity from both bands to their art. And then came The House Of Love, out of nowhere: just heard them on the radio, and it was a big "whaou" moment. With The House of Love came also the so called indie scene, from The Jesus and Mary Chain to the Pixies,..., and to this absolutely magical and very intimate band: The Pastels (quite the mirror-band from U2 in a certain way).:
I went through this but of course not without falling in love with The Beatles, The Kinks, The La's, Blur, Arcade Fire, Belle & Sebastian,... and Gabriel Fauré.
Thank you for opening my ears to so many sounds and emotions.
Here's my list:
U2: The Fly
The House of Love: Shine One
Pixies: Number 13
Ride: Decay
The La's: Timeless Melody
Serge Gainsbourg: Je suis venu te dire que je m'en vais
The Pastels: Something goin'on
The Cure: Siamese Twins
The Velvet Underground: I'll be your mirror
The Doors: Love Street
The Waterboys: Fisherman's blues
The Pogues: A pair of brown eyes
My Bloody Valentine: Cupid Come
The Stone Roses: Waterfall
The Beatles: A day in the Life
The Rolling Stones: Mother's little helper
David Bowie: Starman
Depeche Mode: Never let me down again

After one summer fire...
11 years have passed since my 18th birthday, but there was a lot of music in my life before that. But that year I was deeply immersed in the music of The Doors, as well as early post-punk, especially little-known like Belfegore. I also discovered The Cult and Nina Hagen. Madly loved everything that Kingdom Come did. I also liked to listen to movie soundtracks, for example, to A Clockwork Orange.
If one song each, it's The Order Of Death (Public Image Ltd.), Temple of Love (The Sisters of Mercy), Dead, Jail Or Rock 'N' Roll (Michael Monroe), 18 And Life (Skid Row), Waiting for the Sun (The Doors), In The Name Of The Father (Bono & Gavin Friday), Tower of Song (Leonard Cohen), Sign Your Name (Terence Trent D'Arby), Isolation (Toto), Surrender (Roxette), Head Like A Hole (NIN), Paradise City (GN'R), Silver Rainbow (Genesis), Shake It Out (Florence And The Machine), Jackie (Sinéad O'Connor), Nobody's Perfect (Jessie J), D.R.F.S.R. (Warrant), and many, many other things...
And why all this? It's hard to say. Some songs helped me think, some helped me dream, some songs inspired and at the same time kept me from making a revolution in anything.
