'Show Us Your Light'
'We know that there's a lot of darkness out there in the world and today it entered your city as it has before to do what it always wishes to do: to take the best and the brightest of our communities from us. Against that darkness, show us your light.'
Hours after a mass shooting on the campus of the University of Nevada, the inside of the Sphere lit up in solidarity, a shining field of bright stars, people who 'get to carry each other'.
Tonight's 22-song set included 'Desire', 'Angel of Harlem', and 'Love Rescue Me' from Rattle and Hum, and snippets from other artists including Elton John's 'Sacrifice' and 'Rocket Man', Bob Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone', The Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black', Frankie Goes to Hollywood's 'Two Tribes', and The Beatles' 'Blackbird,' which closed the show after a few lines of U2's 'Gloria'.
What Did Bono Say
After 'Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World' and 'All I Want Is You', he expressed his gratitude to the citizens of Las Vegas: 'People in this town work so hard — waitresses, acrobats, sword swallowers, valets, cops, first responders, you name it. People work hard in this town, they work hard for us to come visit and we appreciate it.'
Toward the end of 'With or Without You', as the endangered species of Es Devlin's Nevada Ark soared overhead, he said: 'Take care of each other. …We're all in danger tonight. So, we fill ourselves up with the strength of knowing that we are with each other, and we belong to each other, and we look after each other. Sing us home one… more… time!'
